In June 2017, the National Institute of Standards and Technology issued Special Publication “800-63: Digital Identity Guidelines”. This suite of documents offers guidance on identity proofing, authentication and federation, for federal agencies implementing digital identity services. These new guidelines are a robust overhaul of the previous version and, importantly, they explicitly include privacy requirements alongside security requirements. Of value to both privacy and security professionals, it is anticipated that the guidelines will not only impact how the federal government implements digital services; private sector may voluntarily adopt the guidelines as well.
