The Department of Commerce announced the U.S. will prohibit users from downloading TikTok or WeChat applications after Sept. 20. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said the move is a "significant action to combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms, and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations." WeChat's general use in the U.S. will also curtail Sept. 20, while TikTok's functionality will end Nov. 12 if the recent deal between ByteDance and Oracle is not approved.
