Toronto has become one of the leading cities in the world for instituting a smart-city infrastructure. Though the Sidewalk Labs project isn't without controversy, smart cities are on the rise. So how do they mesh with privacy? "An ad campaign [recently] released by the Toronto Transit Commission publicly distributes embarrassing surveillance tapes to deter fare evasion," University of Ottawa Juris Doctor Candidate Emilie Scott, CIPP/C, points out, adding, "In light of this, we should be questioning how this campaign reflects on the dissipating privacy norms in our city."
