Mashable reports that Chinese authorities have instructed residents in the province of Xinjiang to download a "surveillance app" on their phones to "automatically detect terrorist and illegal religious videos, images, e-books and electronic documents." The app would scan their phones to detect if any media files match "terrorist-related" content stored on a government database. Users who do not download the app or delete it would be detained for up to 10 days. The government said it will conduct spot checks to ensure the app is on residents' phones. Several human rights groups have expressed concern over what type of data is being collected about users. Chinese police are perceived to have growing authority, particularly in Xinjiang, home to China’s Muslim minority population.
