The organization in charge of managing the internet’s domain name system, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, updated its proposal for a temporary plan to comply with the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation, Wired reports. To comply, ICANN suggests that companies that sell domain names should be able to withhold customer information and that an “accreditation program” would be in place for certain third parties to access Whois data. This is the latest move following the three interim options proposed earlier this year. Limiting access to Whois information has raised concerns from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and criticism from cybersecurity researcher Brian Krebs. ICANN is scheduled to meet this week, and a finalized plan is expected next month. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
