To reconcile its WHOIS public directory in relation to the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has provided three interim options for which it has been accepting public comments, the Electronic Frontier Foundation points out in a blog post. The proposals include keeping the WHOIS database open; setting up an accreditation program for access; and making it accessible only under subpoena. Already, ICANN and European registrars have clashed over whether the data is necessary. The EFF wrote in support of a modified version of a closed database, where it recommends ICANN rely on existing legal mechanisms that allow parties to gain authorization. The comment period ends Jan. 29.
