The New York Times reports the Chinese government is increasing public surveillance by assembling a DNA database for the country's male population. The database of more than 700 million males would allow tracking based on blood, saliva or genetic materials. Law enforcement claims the database is necessary to curb crime, and data subjects have provided consent for the collection. Human Rights Watch China Senior Researcher Maya Wang said the database is "going to have a chilling effect on society as a whole."
