Los Angeles Times reports Gov. Jerry Brown has picked state House Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra, D-Los Angeles, to stand in as the next attorney general of California. The position was previously held by newly elected Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif. As attorney general in one of the country's most powerful states, Harris made privacy and data protection education and enforcement a focus. If confirmed by the state Senate and Assembly, Becerra would be the state's first Latino attorney general. "Xavier has been an outstanding public servant," said Brown, "in the State Legislature, the U.S. Congress, and as a deputy attorney general."
