Malaysiakini reports an independent contractor is under investigation for a 2017 data breach that affected 46.2 million mobile phone subscribers. Data leaked included unique serial numbers linked to individual mobile phones, names, phone numbers and home addresses. The Communications and Multimedia Ministry alleges Nuemera Sdn Bhd, an independent contractor tasked with managing the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's Public Cellular Blocking Service, violated Section 9 of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 because it did not protect "personal data from any loss, misuse [or] modification." The ministry has referred the result of its investigation to the Attorney General’s Chamber for enforcement.
