Police in the York and Peel regions are adopting facial recognition software, Vice reports. York police members used a free trial of Clearview AI and are now in the process of purchasing the technology, while Peel police said they have a license to use the system. A York police spokesperson said the department intends to compare photo and video evidence against a mugshot database. Use of the technology is concerning to privacy advocates as studies have shown racial bias.
