In an article for The Hill, former U.S. Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary for the National Protection and Programs Directorate Suzanne Spaulding looks at what the government shutdown means for the country’s cybersecurity. While Spaulding notes that the DHS has likely done its best to identify essential staff to protect against imminent threat, she writes, “The longer the shutdown continues, the more our concern should grow for our country’s cybersecurity protections — it’s natural for adversaries and nation states to see this as an opportunity for cyber mischief.” Highlighting the poor timing of the shutdown due to recently passed cybersecurity legislation and the threat of losing personnel to the private sector, Spaulding adds, “With each passing day, the impact on our nation’s security grows.”
