Wired reports on how some technology firms are looking away from traditional methods of defending against hackers by shifting their focus toward ways to trap them once they attack. In a recent blog post, Security Engineer Diogo Mónica describes an IT architecture he calls “Crypto Anchors,” something he and his colleague Nathan McCauley implemented when at Square. The system encrypts contents of a database with a key that is stored on a separate and single-focused Hardware Security Module. Mónica explained that the design limits how fast data can be decrypted and removed during an attack, which could increase the chance of detection. Haroon Meer, the founder of security firm Thinkst, said, "I'm not saying this will make you infallible forever, but you make them play on your turf, so you see them coming. That’s the sort of advantage defenders need."
