On Feb. 13, the South African Information Regulator had its first briefing on the country's Protection of Personal Information Act, IT-Online reports. The briefing discussed the POPI's regulations, which are currently being drafted; the commencement date, which is at the discretion of the president and has not been announced yet; and the information regulator's intention to complete a benchmarking scheme to adopt international best practices, the report states. “Any public or private body or any other person that processes personal information, which includes collecting, receiving and/or storing any such personal information, needs to be aware of all PoPI related developments,” said Webber Wentzel’s Alexia Christie. Meanwhile, Pétanque International's POPI Compliance Specialist Tania May, called complying with the act not a "tick-box" process, ITWeb reports.
