The Wall Street Journal reports hundreds of outside software developers have had the ability to scan the inboxes of Gmail users who have signed up for email services. Some of the developers have their computer systems analyze millions of emails daily, while in other cases, their employees will read messages in order to build new features or for training purposes. A pair of the companies, Return Path and Edison Software, said the practice is covered under their user agreements while adding they implement strict protocols for employees reading emails. Google published a response to the report explaining their vetting process for software developers and apps. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
