  • In two biannual reports, Amazon’s Ring said it saw a 65% increase in legal demands for doorbell footage in 2021 and provided a record amount of footage and other data to U.S. authorities throughout the year, TechCrunch reports. More than 85% of demands came through court-issued search warrants, under which Ring provided user data and account video footage. Ring also said it received 2,774 requests from law enforcement to preserve a user’s account for up to six months.
  • Amazon’s Ring rejected a request from U.S. Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., to adjust its settings so the smart doorbell does not record nearby, extraneous audio, Gizmodo reports. Markey sent a letter to the company in June that said Ring’s ability to record such audio risked peoples’ right to “assemble, move, and converse without being tracked,” and requested the company change the settings so the device was not set to record audio as a default setting. The company said the default recording setting was necessary to prevent a "negative experience" for customers.
