The Washington Post reports on the challenges the recently restocked Federal Trade Commission faces in regulating major tech companies. The FTC will work to handle ever-expanding tech companies such as Amazon and Google, and the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica revelations, but will do so despite a limited budget. The agency’s budget stands at $306 million, and its staff of 1,140 is 300 fewer than it was decades earlier. The FTC struggles to field competitive salaries for technologists and finds itself unable to write new rules. “It would be helpful to have Congress clarify the FTC's authority around privacy and data security,” said Consumer Reports Vice President of Consumer Policy and Mobilization Jessica Rich.
