A new report from security firm Trend Micro states that cybercriminals are getting more sophisticated and could use the potential for large fines under the EU General Data Protection Regulation as leverage to extort money out of companies, Computer Weekly reports. Trend Micro has found that adversaries are abandoning "exploit kits and indiscriminate attacks" for more targeted breaches with a larger return on investment. Security researchers believe some organizations may be willing to pay off adversaries to avoid large GDPR fines and reputational damage, the report states.
