The Royal Canadian Mounted Police disclosed its Covert Access and Intercept Team used spyware to access suspects’ mobile phones and collect data, including texts, emails, photos and videos, Politico reports. Police said they can also turn on a phone or laptop’s camera or microphone remotely through the access. The RCMP said the technology was used in 10 investigations between 2018 and 2020, and the tools are used in serious cases when other options are unsuccessful.
