A proposal to subject all travelers to a facial-recognition check when they enter or leave the United States, including citizens, is drawing criticism from privacy advocates and lawmakers, The Washington Post reports. “These concerns are compounded by a lack of congressional authorization and sufficient safeguards, the government’s past security failures, and unanswered questions about the technology’s effectiveness, bias, and broader societal implications,” American Civil Liberties Union Senior Policy Analyst Jay Stanley said of the Department of Homeland Security’s proposal. Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., said he will introduce legislation to prohibit DHS from including U.S. citizens in biometric screening. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
