Global efforts to develop guidelines for the ethical use of artificial intelligence are well-intentioned but fail to account for broad cultural and regional diversity, Montreal AI Ethics Institute Founder Abhishek Gupta and Researcher Victoria Heath write in an op-ed for MIT Technology Review. AI’s challenges and risks differ depending on an individual's location, they said, adding, “If organizations working on global AI ethics fail to acknowledge this, they risk developing standards that are, at best, meaningless and ineffective across all the world’s regions.”
