The New York State Department of Financial Services charged First American Title Insurance over alleged data protection missteps that resulted in a 2019 data breach, The New York Times reports. DFS alleges flaws in a document-management system led to the exposure of several years' worth of sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and bank account information. First American said it "strongly disagrees" with DFS' findings, saying a 2019 review by the Nebraska Department of Insurance revealed no such data security flaws in the company's system.
