The European Commission is rumored to release a "masterplan for connected cars" Wednesday, which could "help focus industry efforts on working together on communication standards" for consumers, the Commission, and the industry, Stephan Appt and Ben Gardner write in an op-ed for Out-Law.com. Building a solid legal infrastructure and fostering a spirit of collaboration between the Commission and developers is vital from the start, they write. "No manufacturer wants to have to reverse engineer what they have produced because the legal position changes," they continue. "This particularly applies to the use of personal data, which stakeholders view as the gold mine of the future." It is also important that lawmakers clearly define connected car data ownership, they add.
