The New York Times reports on a legal feud between actor James Woods and an anonymous Twitter user who Woods alleges defamed his character and tarnished his reputation. As a result of the tweet, Woods is suing the user only known as Abe List (@abelisted) for calling him a “cocaine addict” in a tweet last July. Plaintiffs argue that the tweet was an attempted statement of fact and are seeking $10 million. Up to this point, the Twitter user has remained anonymous, but that might soon change. Judge Mel Red Recana denied a motion filed by Abe List’s lawyers to strike down the case, which, according to the report, could open the door for unmasking the user. The defense has argued that the user’s tweets were hyperbole and not statement of fact, and that Woods has tweeted out similar derogatory statements to other people in the past.
