An investigation conducted by Big Brother Watch found the use of facial-recognition technology by police departments produced a high level of inaccurate results, BBC News reports. After sending freedom-of-information requests to police forces in the U.K., the Metropolitan Police department said 102 people were incorrectly identified using the systems during the Notting Hill Carnival in 2016 and 2017, while South Wales Police said the technology made 2,685 matches from May 2017 to March 2018, but 2,451 were false positives. U.K. Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said the inaccurate results have been a priority for her office, adding police departments need to show the technology’s effectiveness if they plan on using it over less-intrusive methods.
