We welcome submissions from both members and non-members of the IAPP. We recommend that authors send a paragraph detailing proposed topics for contributions to Angelique Carson, editor of The Privacy Advisor, to ensure the topic is a good fit for the publication.

Publication guidelines:

  • While there is some flexibility, we recommend 750-1,200 words as the ideal range.
  • We don't publish footnotes, but you can feel free to hyperlink within text as needed for citations, etc.
  • The piece should have a "news-magazine" feel to it, versus an academic or legal journal tone. This means you can be a little more casual, writing like you'd talk to a friend of peer over coffee versus stiff and formal.
  • The piece should be geared toward practical, "how to" advice that aims to help a privacy professional to their job better. Tell them what they need to know, and then indicate how to use that information wisely.

Deadlines: We generally accept stories on a rolling basis and aim to include in the next edition of The Privacy Advisor following receipt of the story, depending on competing news and space. Often, we'll also cycle the story through our Daily Dashboard newsletter to share the content with a wider audience, though this is not a guarantee.

Authors: We publish author headshot photos and short bios (two or three sentences) with each article. We will also need an email address associated with the author, just for internal use to create your author profile in our system.

To submit a topic proposal, article or to ask questions, please e-mail the editor at acarson@iapp.org.
