An article for Bloomberg Businessweek reports on how Chinese spies were able to compromise America’s technology supply chain and reach almost 30 U.S. companies with a piece of hardware smaller than a grain of rice. Based on interviews with both government and corporate sources, the article states, “This attack was something graver than the software-based incidents the world has grown accustomed to seeing.” According to those familiar with the matter, microchips implanted in servers’ motherboards allowed attackers to create a doorway into any network. Joe Grand, a hardware hacker and the founder of Grand Idea Studio, said, “Hardware is just so far off the radar, it’s almost treated like black magic.”
