Sick of checking into a restaurant contact tracing application, a couple of Hong Kong friends decided to meet for picnics instead, France 24 reports. Their idea has since caught on citywide as more than 6,000 city residents have joined their private social media group to circumvent the government’s LeaveHomeSafe app. In December 2021, the government began requiring adults under age 65 to log their location when they go out to public venues with a QR code. Residents have been skeptical of how the data the app generates could potentially be used by authorities.
