23-page national security plan brought forth by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., looks to bring more “balance” between data privacy and national security, BuzzFeed reports. The plan calls for more information sharing between government agencies and the advancement of tools to stop “cyber adversaries,” the report states. “Tools like encryption are the bedrock of internet security — without them, the web would be a far more dangerous place,” the proposal states. The GOP document touches upon the importance of encryption, but also law enforcement’s argument against it, noting encryption hinders investigations into malicious activity and allows terrorists to find ways to go dark. “In confronting this challenge, however, we must not undermine American citizens’ privacy protections,” the proposal reads.
