In response to the rise of voice command services, German Federal Data Protection Commissioner Andrea Voßhoff has raised concerns over the technology, EurActiv reports. “As data protection commissioner, I view these intelligent voice command assistants, which ‘eavesdrop’ permanently with a microphone, quite critically,” Voßhoff told WirtschaftsWoche. Voßhoff’s comments come after Google recently announced its voice command service, Google Home, the company’s response to the popular Amazon Echo. While Voßhoff said people are free to use the technology if they please, she warns about the potential issues the voice command services could open. “I would advise people to think carefully about such a decision,” Voßhoff said. “To weigh up the gain in comfort provided by these systems against —at least theoretical — round-the-clock surveillance.”
