  • U.S. Federal Trade Commissioners voted 5-0 on a $1.5 million joint settlement order from the commission and the Department of Justice against fitness and diet service provider WW International stemming from alleged Children's Online Privacy Protection Act violations. In addition to the fine, the FTC, for the first time, ordered a company to destroy all previously collected personal information associated with the allegations as well as the products that used or incorporated the information.
  • U.S. Federal Trade Commission Senior Attorney Lesley Fair wrote a blog post detailing the recent settlement order and compliance suggestions relating to health data and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Included in Fair's compliance keys were reviewing age-gate locks, honoring COPPA notice requirements, and ensuring appropriate data retention and minimization schemes.
  • BBB National Programs’ Children’s Advertising Review Unit found TickTalk’s smartwatch phone and application failed to provide concise notice of its collection practices of children’s data and failed to directly notify parents. The company agreed to corrective actions, including updating parental notifications on its website and app, correcting its privacy notice, and providing means for obtaining verifiable consent from parents.
