The U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced it found Cambridge Analytica had engaged in deceptive practices related to its data collection. The data analytics firm illicitly gathered the information of millions of Facebook users for voter profiling and targeting. The FTC also found Cambridge Analytica had misrepresented its participation in the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement. As part of its Final Order, the FTC ruled the firm can no longer misrepresent how it protects personal information. Cambridge Analytica is prohibited from falsifying its Privacy Shield status and must apply the agreement’s protections to all information it collected while participating in the program.
