NBC News reports on a former identity thief turned security consultant. Once called the “Original Internet Godfather” by U.S. Secret Service, Brett Johnson now owns a consulting company specialized in combating cybercrime. Johnson said the Equifax breach has made it even easier for identity thieves and expects identity-based crimes to increase. “Before this, a criminal would buy information and he was never sure if it was correct. With the Equifax data you now know everything is correct — and that is priceless to a criminal,” he said. To protect against identity theft, Johnson suggests consumers freeze credit files and monitor credit activity.
