The European Data Protection Supervisor announced the European Council and Parliament have informally agreed to data protection rules for EU institutions and bodies. The agreement will update Regulation 45/2001 to bring it closer to the data protection standards seen in the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation. The revision will require EU bodies to demonstrate their compliance with data protection rules and prioritize the implementation of safeguards for individuals. “We welcome today’s announcement of a political agreement on equivalent rules for the EU institutions and bodies and call for their swift adoption and publication, to ensure that they become applicable without further delay,” EDPS Giovanni Buttarelli said in a statement.
