In a letter to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the Electronic Privacy Information Center has asked the agency to prevent Facebook from sharing a trove of user data with the research community, MediaPost reports. Last week, Facebook announced it would allow Social Science One — a new research organization lead by academics from Harvard and Stanford — to access one petabyte of data for the purpose of studying the spread of "fake news." The data shared would be anonymized, according to Facebook. EPIC, however, argues the data-sharing plans likely violate Facebook's 2011 consent decree with the FTC. "The Consent Order is clear," according to a statement from EPIC, "Facebook must obtain affirmative express consent before disclosing personal data to third parties."
