A report for The Hill looks at the growing sentiment against so-called backdoors into modern digital communications technology. Several lawmakers, as well as a host of digital rights groups, are pressing the Obama administration to publicly reject any proposals that would allow law enforcement to access users’ digital communications by weakening encryption. “The administration has a real moment right now when they can define encryption policy and really set the tone not just in the U.S. but in the rest of the world,” said the ACLU’s Neema Singh Guliani. Meanwhile, former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said, “You can’t have privacy without security,” adding, “To me, the most frustrating thing is when people treat privacy and security as if they were trade-offs.”
