Telcordia is rewriting its phone number database after the FBI and the Federal Communications Commission discovered that foreign coders worked on the project, a breach of U.S. law, The Washington Post reports. “The database is significant because it tracks nearly every phone number in North America, making it a key tool for law enforcement agencies seeking to monitor criminal or espionage targets,” the report states. While seven foreign citizens contributed to the project, agencies were particularly concerned over the contribution of a Chinese engineer. The “massive undertaking” of rewriting began “to mitigate any concerns” from federal law enforcement, not due to any breaches, said Telcordia spokeswoman Sharon Oddy.
