Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Brian Beamish is asking the city of Hamilton to reconsider its plan to amend its current laws surrounding CCTVs, Global News reports. The city is considering changing its laws to allow residents and businesses to use their security cameras to assist in police investigations by pointing them at the street, rather than just at their own property. Beamish said this move would undermine privacy rights established under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. “While in some cases CCTV surveillance may enhance public safety and the security of assets, it also poses risks to the privacy of individuals whose personal information may be collected, used and disclosed,” Beamish stated in a letter to Hamilton’s mayor and police chief.
