Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-Kan., has reintroduced the Email Privacy Act, which aims to amend the Electronic Communications Protection Act by requiring law enforcement to obtain a warrant before accessing an individual’s emails through their email provider. Sound familiar? It should. While the reintroduced version of the act is not yet available, it will likely mirror the 2016 House version of the bill, HR 699, which was unanimously passed first by the House Judiciary Committee and then the full House of Representatives before a series of amendments from the Senate caused sponsors to pull it.
