Amidst the fallout from the massive hack on Anthem, some are saying lack of a “clear encryption standard” highlights the need to revisit and possibly revise the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Associated Press reports. DirectTrust CEO David Kibbe said, “We need a whole new look at HIPAA … Any identifying information relevant to a patient … should be encrypted.” Anthem has said the data stolen from its servers, which included Social Security numbers and other sensitive information, was unencrypted. On Friday, a spokesman for Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said, “We will consider whether there are ways to strengthen current protections.” The Wall Street Journal reports the National Association of Insurance Commissioners will investigate the hack. Meanwhile, the Federal Trade Commission has approved final orders in the PaymentsMD privacy case.
