The Australian Dental Association has sent a warning saying private health insurers owning dental surgeries are misusing data gathered through the HICAPS system for commercial gain, Australian Financial Review reports. The ADA sent the message responding to a Productivity Commission study into expanded data sharing. ADA President Dr. Rick Olive said the contracts between dentists and the insurers possessed clauses related to the use of private information in HICAPS he believes were “too generous” to insurers. "This enables insurers … especially those that are vertically integrated and operate practices owned by them … to have access to sensitive information and be able to act on this information to increase their competitiveness," the ADA submission said.
