The Australian Communications and Media Authority says a universal telecommunications regulatory framework would provide consistent consumer safeguards, ZDNet reports. A single framework could consolidate the Do Not Call Register Act, the Spam Act and the Telecommunications Act to align with obligations in Privacy Act 1988. “A new scheme would, ideally, consist of a universal consent-based framework under which contact could only occur where either consumer consent has first been obtained, or where a public interest exemption is applicable,” the ACMA said.
