CNN reports that a 20-year-old student from Australian National University was behind the discovery of fitness tracking "heatmaps" that mistakenly revealed the location of top secret military bases. The student, Nathan Ruser, came across Strava’s global heatmap and noticed anomalies in the data that seemed to demonstrate military activity or other sensitive information. He said, "It is a bit surprising that it sort of sat there [for months]." In a statement to CNN, Strava said, "Our global heatmap represents an aggregated and anonymized view of over a billion activities uploaded to our platform. It excludes activities that have been marked as private and user-defined privacy zones.”
