Get DPO Ready: Training and Resources

The EU's General Data Protection Regulation is finalized. With it comes the mandate for an estimated 75,000 data protection officers (DPOs)* in Europe and around the world. There’s a lot at stake, and failure to comply with the GDPR is not an option. This new DPO position will be key to success.

The role of the data protection officer is complex and DPOs will require proficiency in multiple competencies. They’ll also need to possess comprehensive knowledge and understanding of data protection laws, not just as they relate to companies operating in the EU, but to any global organization conducting business with—and handling personal data of—European Union citizens.

But where do organizations find qualified, highly trained DPOs? And where do DPOs get the training and certifications they need to stand out from the crowd?

The IAPP is the answer. Serving 26,000 privacy and data protection professionals in 90 countries, we deliver everything DPOs need to be successful. IAPP trainings, certifications and conferences are known throughout the world as the best way to help data professionals stay current on legal and regulatory developments, and to network with their colleagues and peers.

Our Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) delivers the comprehensive GDPR knowledge, perspective and understanding to ensure compliance and data protection success in Europe—equipping DPOs to take advantage of the career opportunity this sweeping legislation represents.

The Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certification arms privacy and data protection professionals with everything they need to establish, maintain and manage an enterprise-wide privacy program across its entire lifecycle. CIPMs know privacy regulations, and they know how to make them work for their organizations.

Combined, these two certifications, both certified under ISO standard 17024:2012, prepare a successful DPO. But don’t just take our word for it.

Eric Lachaud, who authored the article “Should the DPO be Certified?” for the Oxford University’s International Data Privacy Law Journal, states that “The most appropriate certification for the DPO is a combination of the IAPP’s Certified Information Privacy Professional credential for EU professionals (CIPP/E) and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM).”

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has also weighed in with its paper, Professional Standards for Data Protection Officers, which conveys that DPOs should also “be encouraged to obtain certifications in data protection and to continue to develop their professional skills and competencies through networking with other data protection professionals and attending conferences and events.” The EDPS specifically recommends the IAPP’s CIPP/E certification.

We’d like to tell you more about the DPO-related benefits the IAPP delivers, and our recent white paper, The GDPR Demands 75k DPOs, is a great place to start.

We also invite you to sign up for our live CIPP/E and CIPM trainings, both of which are available worldwide through our IAPP Official Training Partners. IAPP online training is available for both designations, with the new GDPR-updated CIPP/E training available January 2017.
