Department Overview:

The Office of Ethics, Compliance & Audit Services (ECAS) is primarily responsible for coordinating audit, compliance and investigations efforts across the system. ECAS is the independent audit and investigative arm of the University that reports directly to the Board of Regents. ECAS assists campuses with their specific concerns and coordinates systemwide approaches to address the most significant shared risk priorities. ECAS leverages expertise throughout the system, identifies opportunities to strengthen our audit program, compliance and risk management, and design improvements in a measured and proactive manner.

Position Summary:

The Office of Ethics, Compliance, and Audit Services (ECAS) is seeking a Director of Compliance to join our dynamic team. ECAS is seeking a proactive leader dedicated to upholding the highest standards of ethics and compliance excellence. A Compliance Team within ECAS coordinates systemwide peer groups to identify and address compliance risks, share best practices, and promote and ensure regulatory compliance across the system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 20% Leadership and Team Management: Effectively lead and manage a team of experienced professionals, inspiring, motivating, and mentoring them towards success. Lead subject matter experts in areas including privacy, healthcare, Clery Act, ADA, and others.
  • 20% Training and Risk Management: Lead training initiatives, conduct risk assessments, and program assessments. Have overall responsibility for project management, including completing the annual compliance plan presented to and approved by the Board of Regents.
  • 20% Project Prioritization and Management: Assign, direct, and evaluate work, effectively prioritizing projects and significant risk priorities. Navigate competing priorities with a strong understanding of compliance processes and best practices.
  • 20% Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of the latest regulatory developments relevant to the compliance portfolio. Experience in implementing compliance audit recommendations, conducting compliance audits or assessments, and a strong understanding of internal controls and risk assessment methodologies is important for the success of this role.
  • 20% Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a representative on various systemwide and Office of the President committees and initiatives, collaborating effectively with stakeholders at all levels and across organizations. Ability to collaborate with various stakeholders, demonstrate flexibility and addressing various viewpoints, while reaching consensus is a key to the success of this role.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Min 10 years Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with implementation of audit recommendations and compliance audits.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Strong decision-making and time management skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet critical deadlines.
    • Strong understanding of compliance processes and best practices.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing about complex compliance, regulatory, or other risk areas. Requires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance of, others in sensitive situations and ability to tailor communication styles to a variety of audiences.
    • Familiarity with project management concepts and proficiency in utilizing technology.
    • Proven track record of effective leadership in compliance or a related field.
    • Excellent collaboration skills with stakeholders at all levels across the organization.
    • Dedication to upholding the highest standards of compliance excellence.

Education:

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Advanced degree, license or certification preferred.

Compensation/Benefits:

  • Salary Grade: Grade 27
  • Payscale: $215,000 - $235,000
  • Full Salary Range: $129,600 - $254,400
    • The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
