Clemson University is seeking applications for the role of Chief Privacy Officer (CPO). The Chief Privacy Officer is an integral part of the compliance and ethics leadership team, helping to ensure an effective enterprise-wide compliance and ethics program.

Under direction of the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, the CPO provides leadership and oversight for the enterprise-wide privacy program and serves as a thought leader on all privacy-related issues.

The CPO will be responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive privacy strategy that adequately protects information assets, meets compliance requirements, and reduces overall risk. The CPO will work closely with the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) to ensure alignment between security and privacy practices.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Establishing privacy policies, notices, standards, and processes with stakeholders across the institution.
  • Ensuring that the institution complies with applicable state, federal, and international laws, University policies and procedures, and industry privacy standards, including HIPAA, FERPA, GDPR, the SC Family Privacy Protection Act and other laws and standards.
  • Conducting privacy reviews of information technology application requests and data requests involving personal or sensitive information.
  • Conducting privacy risk assessments on systems and projects that use, collect, disclose or store personal or sensitive information.
  • Developing and managing privacy training, education, and awareness for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Advising and counseling University constituents on best practices, new technologies, privacy complaints, and potential institution-wide risks.
  • Monitoring proposed legislation, and ensure the CECO and CIO are apprised of all privacy and data security related legal developments that affect operations.
  • Conducting timely investigations and breach analyses to University privacy incidents.
  • Collaborating with Information Security and Compliance teams to evaluate whether security incidents potentially involve personal or sensitive data, advising on the appropriate investigation and remediation of such breaches.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree and relevant experience.
  • Experience managing Research, Health Care, Educational Records.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, management, communication, technical and presentation skills.
  • High level of personal integrity, as well as the ability to professionally handle confidential matters, with judgment and maturity.

Preferred/Physical Requirements:

Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP), or HIPAA Professional (CHP) preferred.

Work Schedule:

Standard Hrs: 37.5; Expected Salary Range ($ 106,000.00 - $ 150,000.00)
