In an interview with Information Security Media Group, tw-Security Founder and Managing Partner Tom Walsh discussed how the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which was first introduced in 1998, is ready for an update to reflect the current technological and cybersecurity landscape. Walsh said, "when the rule came out, we didn't have mobile phones in the sense we have today — back then they were just cellular phones ... and texting wasn't even around. Cloud (sic) in 1998 were white puffy things in the sky, not a place to store data." Walsh also discusses underutilized technologies in the health care sector, why insiders pose such a security risk to the industry, and why information considered sensitive data should be broadened.
