Head of WhatsApp Will Cathcart said the service would not accept a push by the British government to weaken end-to-end encryption, BBC reports. As part of efforts to police child sex-abuse images, the government suggested scanning private messages as part of the Online Safety Bill. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children criticized WhatsApp’s position on not having a back door for law enforcement for E2EE. Cathcart said, “Client-side scanning cannot work in practice.”
