The Washington State Attorney General’s Office has released its third annual Data Breach Report. The study found nearly 3.4 million Washington citizens were affected by the 51 data breaches reported to the office between July 2017 and July 2018. The figure represents a 26 percent increase from last year and a 700 percent increase from 2016. The attorney general’s report identifies areas where the state’s data breach notification law can be improved. The office states the law currently does not cover several types of sensitive information and allows organizations too much time before they must notify citizens of a breach.
