Vermont passed a first-of-its-kind law regulating data brokers that buy and sell personal information, TechCrunch reports. Under the new law, data brokers will be required to register with the state, take standard security measures, and notify authorities in the event of a data breach. Using peoples’ personal information for criminal purposes is now an actionable offense. “It’s been a huge oversight,” Director of the World Privacy Forum Pam Dixon said. “Until Vermont passed this law there was no regulation for data brokers. It’s that serious. We’ve been looking for something like this to be put in place for like 20 years.”
