U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich declined to issue a preliminary injunction requested by the Electronic Privacy Information Center that would have blocked a citizenship question from the 2020 census, CNN reports. EPIC argued that the U.S. Census Bureau was required to conduct a privacy impact assessment before announcing the addition of the question, but the government asserted it is only required to do so before collecting census responses. In her decision, Friedrich wrote, "The Bureau did not act contrary to the E-Government Act by deciding to collect citizenship data before conducting, reviewing, or releasing a PIA addressing that decision." In a statement, EPIC said it "intends to press forward with" its lawsuit.
